When you multiply 2 numbers, sometimes you don't want an exact answer. You want an estimate. Let's say we have 92 marbles in each jar, and we have 6 jars, and we want to know approximately how many marbles we have altogether. So, we can round 92 to 90, 9 x 6 which is 54 and tack on our zero. So, our estimate is 540 marbles. Using an area model to multiply 92 x 6, we came out to 552 which is very close to our estimate of 540. So that's a reasonable answer. Let's try estimating 23 x 17. We can round 23 to 20 and 17 also to 20. Use your facts, 2 x 2 which is 4 and tack on two zeros. Multiply 23 x 17 and we come out with 391 which is very close to our estimate of 400. We've used compatible numbers; those are numbers easily multiplied in your head. Use compatible numbers when you want to estimate your products.
