Dozens of protestors endured the cold weather—and one hostile passerby—as they stood outside of the Bruce R. Thompson Federal Building in Reno on Tuesday. The weekly event, Tyranny Tuesday, is organized by Indivisible Northern Nevada. The rally’s participants showed up to stand with the Nevada Immigrant Coalition (NIC), which is demanding information about the more than 30 immigrants who were detained in northern Nevada last week.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials, who last week did not respond to a request for information on operations or detainees in northern Nevada, on Tuesday posted a press release to the ICE website indicating 52 people had been arrested in northern Nevada from May 5-8 by ICE agents and “interagency partners,” who were not named. Four individuals with criminal convictions were listed as being detained in the operation, but no other names or information was provided for the other 48 individuals.
The sheriff’s office is refusing to provide information or answer questions about the detentions, but Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam confirmed Thursday to county leadership that 45 people had been detained at the jail by ICE since May 5.
WCSO hasn’t released information publicly on those detainments. Instead, a spokesperson misdirected This Is Reno and is now refusing to answer questions about the detainments.
