Latticed stinkhorn mushroom (C. ruber), called so in allusion to its striking fruit body that is shaped like a round hollow sphere with interlaced or latticed branches. Its odor is described as resembling rotting meat and attracts flies and other insects that help disperse the spores. The German Mycological Society named ''C. ruber'' the 2011 "Mushroom of the Year" and described it "like an alien from a science fiction horror film". In parts of rural France (where I took this photo), it is known as cœur de sorcière, or ‘The witch’s heart' and fittingly to this name the naturalist Ciro Pollini (1782-1833) reported finding it growing on a human skull in a tomb in a deserted church.
