"South of the Border Down Mexico Way" is a popular song written by Jimmy Kennedy and Michael Carr. It was originally released in 1939, with many versions following, including one for the film of the same name sung by star Gene Autry. I think of it as a Gene Autry song, but the version by big band leader Shep Fields, with lead vocals by Hal Derwin, spent five weeks at No.1. It has been recorded by many well-known singers. The drum for this version is a cajon, played by JoAnn Wright.
