Abstract - Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) finds extensive application in various industries; however, it faces challenges related to UV blocking, water absorption and tensile strength. This study investigates the incorporation of kraft lignin (KL) and cationic kraft lignin (CKL) to enhance properties of PVA films. Incorporating KL and CKL significantly improves UV-blocking capabilities. Both PVA/KL and PVA/CKL composite films demonstrate complete UV protection. Moreover, as the KL content in PVA/KL composite films increases, their water absorption decreases. Conversely, in PVA/CKL composite films, water absorption increases with higher CKL content, which is attributed to the hydrophilic effect of the METAC positive charge group. Adding 3%wt. CKL yields the highest tensile strength of 90 MPa, providing a promising solution to the tensile strength challenges in PVA films. These findings provide valuable insights for a wide range of industrial applications.
