Why I Don't Like Using Ground to Check 208/240 Circuits

So, I got a question recently and it boiled down to "why I like to hopscotch" when checking for voltage in an air handler, heat pump, etc. I hope that this video will help some of you understand why I personally think the hopscotch method of troubleshooting is a better way than any other way I "thought" I was doing correctly.

This example unit is a single phase, 208/240V air handler with electric heat. You could apply these concepts to a compressor, outdoor fan motor, etc. as long as it is a 208/240V load and has a single switch controlling the circuit. When you start troubleshooting a furnace with 120V, it is a little different or if you had a 2 pole contactor on a 240V compressor.

There is nothing wrong with using your own troubleshooting method...whatever it is...AS LONG AS YOU TRULY UNDERSTAND IT !!!

I think a lot of people don't try to think things through enough and hate to say that they get confused about their own readings from their own troubleshooting.
