Whistleblowers play a critical role in promoting accountability and integrity across sectors. As employees operating within organisations, their disclosures place employers and workplace professionals at the centre of how whistleblowing is managed—from initial disclosure through to investigation, resolution, reparation, and, where possible, reintegration.
Against this backdrop, the upcoming South African Whistleblowing Code of Practice (expected to be published later this year) presents a timely opportunity for organisations to strengthen their preparedness. Beyond regulatory compliance, the Code encourages the development of workplace cultures rooted in trust, ethics, and integrity.
This Democracy Works Foundation (DWF) workshop, held in Cape Town, aimed to deepen practical understanding of whistleblowing within the South African workplace, with a focus on:
• Identifying the signs and characteristics of a bona fide whistleblower
• Addressing malicious or false whistleblower claims
• Understanding the role of employment law post-disclosure, particularly in securing reparations
• Exploring the future of anonymised whistleblowing through unions, secure reporting channels, civic technology, and robust IT systems.
Whether you are an employer, HR professional, compliance officer, union representative, or civil society practitioner, this video highlights some insights shared during the workshop.
