Earthworms are often called “ecosystem engineers” because their presence directly improves soil structure. As they move through the soil, they create tunnels and channels which increase aeration and porosity. These burrows allow rainwater to infiltrate more easily, reducing runoff and erosion. Their feeding activity mixes organic residues with mineral particles, forming stable soil aggregates. These aggregates are the foundation of a crumbly, well-structured soil that is easier for plant roots to penetrate. Earthworms also break down leaf litter and crop residues, converting them into nutrient-rich castings. These castings contain humus, microbial enzymes, and plant-available nutrients, which boost fertility naturally without chemicals. A soil rich in worms is usually a living, balanced soil with better moisture retention and improved root growth. Therefore, encouraging earthworm populations through mulching, minimum tillage, and organic matter addition is a practical, low-cost strategy for farmer
