Thinking Inside the Box is a chess book about everything. As opposed to the first five books in the series, which were workbooks specifically designed to develop the reader’s skills in calculation and strategic understanding, Thinking Inside the Box teaches the basics. Of everything. Every page introduces a new idea or a new concept, from determining your chess personality type to nutrition. In it Aagaard focuses on explaining concepts and principles, thinking patterns, and ways of improving decision making over the board. Thinking Inside the Box is certainly one of the most entertaining chess books I’ve read, while being useful at the same time.

I wanna thank GM Aagaard for the interview. He is my favorite chess author, and I was extatic to get to meet him and to discuss GM Preparation, my favorite chess book series.

Grandmaster Jacob Aagaard is one of the most accomplished chess trainers and authors of all time. His books are considered to be the best resource for improving chess players, including those who are already Grandmasters, which makes him almost unique in the world of chess publishing. He is the author of books and series mentioned, quoted, and recommended as essential reading by every content creator and chess coach. He is also the only chess author in the world to win all four major Book of the Year awards: English Chess Federation (2010), ChessCafe.com (2001), Association of Chess Professionals (2013) and the Boleslavsky Medal from FIDE's trainer committee (2012).

Jacob Aagaard is also a strong Grandmaster. His accomplishments include winning the 2007 British Chess Championship, second place in the 2004 Scottish Chess Championship, first in the 2005 Scottish Championship (was not a British citizen, so the title didn’t go to him). He finally won the title in 2012 when he was eligible, with the score of 7/9. He became a FIDE senior trainer in 2012.

He is the co-owner of Quality Chess, one of the best publishing companies out there. Aagaard also runs Killer Chess Training.

The Grandmaster Preparation series is one of the best known and most successfull series of chess books ever written for advanced players. While most books tend to cater to the majority of the chess audience, beginners, and people who only play online, Aagaard has created books meant for strong tournament players. That alone sets them apart from the herd. All six books are also incredibly well written, annotated in a way that will help you improve, and contain hundreds of hand-picked problems for the reader to solve.
