Picture this. You follow the rules. You never call out. You don’t ask coworkers to save you. And then one day, you’re suddenly the villain because you finally say no. Welcome to workplace drama.

In today’s story, a hospice nurse has spent years handling her shifts without issue, including mandatory on-call nights. A newer coworker with four kids and a rough attendance history hits her third strike when her babysitter cancels last minute. The narrator offers a fair trade that would save her job and score her Valentine’s Day off. Instead of taking it, the coworker refuses, tries to guilt her, and pushes for an exception that doesn’t exist. The policy kicks in. Fired.

Now the office tension is thick, because apparently being child-free means you’re the default backup plan. Some coworkers think compassion means breaking boundaries, while others are quietly glad it wasn’t their problem.
