This Holy Week, the aroma of Binignit, a beloved Filipino dessert, filled our home, sweet and comforting, much like the bonds of family. This year, I'm behind the camera, capturing the joy of making this traditional treat with my siblings. My brother, caught mid-bite of a juicy dragon fruit under the mango tree where we prepared the Binignit, perfectly embodies the relaxed yet loving atmosphere of our family gathering.
The recipe itself is simple, yet deeply meaningful. We started with the basic ingredients: sweet potatoes, saba bananas, and tapioca pearls – each representing a piece of our shared heritage. We carefully peeled and chopped the sweet potatoes, their earthy sweetness promising a comforting warmth. The saba bananas, ripe and golden, added their characteristic sweetness and creamy texture. And the tapioca pearls, small and chewy, provided a playful contrast to the softer ingredients.
As we cooked the Binignit together, the kitchen buzzed with laughter and shared stories. My sister expertly stirred the pot, her movements fluid and practiced, while my brother, ever the helper, diligently washed and prepped the ingredients. The process itself was a bonding experience, each step a reminder of the generations who came before us, sharing this same tradition. The final product, a warm, sweet, and comforting bowl of Binignit, was more than just a dessert; it was a symbol of our family’s love and connection. Happy Holy Week! ❤️
