In 1998, a naïve and desperate Janine Jones agrees to take a flight from South Africa to Peru to illegally traffic drugs in an attempt to get out of her tough financial situation. Janine walked straight into an ambush and was immediately arrested by South American authorities. Sentenced to seven years in prison, where most inmates spoke Spanish, life was tough. After serving two years, she was fortunate to be released on parole. But there were few privileges, prisoners were allowed to have their own businesses and sell their goods to visitors. Now freed, Janine left Peru and made her way to Brazil to catch a direct flight to Johannesburg. But she first had to cross the dangerous Amazon jungle on foot, through Bolivia, before arriving in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Arriving back in South Africa, she moved to Mitchell's Plain in Cape Town, the place where she was born. Money was tight but Janine knew that she had to make an honest living. Drawing from her entrepreneurial skills learnt in prison she soon opened a shop at the up market V&A Waterfront in Cape Town selling beaded cutlery and decorated kitchenware, employing mainly single mothers and fathers.
