Britain's Queen Elizabeth II on Wednesday (8/10) called for Pakistan and India to end 50 years of rivalry, insisting a rapprochement between the Commonwealth neighbours would open up vast opportunities. She was addressing a special sitting of the two houses of the Pakistan parliament, in the capital Islamabad. The queen arrived on Tuesday for a six-day state visit to mark Pakistan's 50th year of independence.
Later, the queen watched cricketers in action on the third day of the first test between Pakistan and South Africa, in Rawalpindi. Members of both teams were introduced to the queen by skippers Saeed Anwer and Hansie Cronje.
