Geography and Formation
Part of the North American Rocky Mountain system, formed 80-55 million years ago during the Laramide orogeny
Characterized by jagged, dramatic peaks, many exceeding 3,000 meters (9,800 feet)
Feature distinctive grey limestone and shale formations, creating their iconic serrated appearance
Home to the Continental Divide, separating waters flowing to the Pacific from those flowing to the Atlantic and Arctic
