The reason 44.1kHz 16-bit audio is the CD standard is thanks to PCM adaptors, yet they're unknown to most people.
Had a chance to briefly play around with this combination in the Hacklab. I've always been very intrigued by these devices and was great to get my hands on one finally. Video was recorded using a crappy phone. Audio was recorded both to and from the PCM adaptor via my iriver H300 running Rockbox. Was a very stable combination from what I could tell even in 16-bit. The PCM adaptor wouldn't work at all with another Philips VCR we had lying around.
