The Char Dham, which means "four abodes" in Hindi, is a highly regarded Hindu pilgrimage route located in Uttarakhand, India's Garhwal Himalayas. It includes four hallowed places of pilgrimage:

Yamunotri: Yamuna River's origin, thought to be the home of Goddess Yamuna.
Gangotri: The Ganges River's source, the home of Goddess Ganga and regarded as Hinduism's most sacred river.

Nestled among snowy peaks, Kedarnath is a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Badrinath is thought to be the place where Vishnu resides when he is in his meditative form.


The Chardham Yatra typically opens its doors in May and closes by November due to harsh winter conditions in the high mountains. The tentative opening dates for 2024 are:

Yamunotri and Gangotri Temples: May 10th (Akshaya Tritiya)
Kedarnath Temple: May 11th ( Mesh Lagna)
Badrinath Temple: May 12th

ROUTE
Haridwar/Rishikesh: Most journeys commence from Haridwar or Rishikesh, which serve as base camps for onward travel. Pilgrims often pay respects at temples in these towns before continuing.
Yamunotri (3,293 m): Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the source of the Yamuna River, Yamunotri is the first dham. While the temple itself is at Hanumanghatti, pilgrims undertake a short trek to Janki Kund, the source of the Yamuna.
Gangotri (3,048 m): Next comes Gangotri, the origin of the holy Ganges River. Here, pilgrims worship Goddess Ganga and partake in the sacred Ganga aarti (river worship ceremony).
Guptkashi (1,319 m): Guptkashi serves as a resting point before journeying onwards to Kedarnath. Here, pilgrims can also visit the revered Vishwanath Temple.
Kedarnath (3,584 m): Perched atop a mountain peak, Kedarnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Reaching Kedarnath involves a moderately challenging trek that can be undertaken on foot or by pony.
Gaurikund (3,494 m): Gaurikund, located near Kedarnath, is believed to be where Goddess Parvati resided. Here, pilgrims take a holy dip in the kund (natural pool).
Badrinath (3,133 m): The final dham, Badrinath, is home to the Badrinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The scenic beauty surrounding Badrinath is breathtaking.

Things to Consider

Physical Fitness: The Chardham Yatra involves trekking in mountainous regions. A good level of physical fitness is essential, especially for reaching Kedarnath.
Weather: Weather conditions in the Himalayas can be unpredictable. Be prepared for rain, cold temperatures, and even snowfall at higher altitudes.
Accommodation: There are limited accommodation options along the route, particularly in the higher reaches. Booking in advance, especially during peak season (May–June & September–October), is essential.
Permits: Depending on the chosen route, permits for trekking might be required. Check with local authorities or tour operators for any permit needs.
