VIDEO PREMIERE: Only two measures still exist of Franz Joseph Haydn's "Concerto per il violone (Contrabasso)" from 1763. In his introduction to this performance, bassist, composer, and Heifetz Institute teacher Sam Suggs says, "as a musical paleontologist, that is the tooth of a dinosaur. So I needed to figure out what this thing ate."
Thus began what Suggs describes as a decade-long quest to realize and recreate Haydn's lost concerto in a historically authentic style. Hear the astonishing results in this performance from the Heifetz Institute 2021 "Double Bass Showcase," featuring Suggs - the first solo bassist in 36 years to join the Concert Artists Guild roster, and recognized with an award for Extraordinary Creativity at the 2017 Bradetich Foundation International Double Bass Competition - and faculty pianist Jessica X. Osborne.
