All good training starts with play.

All my training is taught using games. So first we need a puppy who wants to engage and play with me. That’s going to be the mission over the next few weeks.
-watch how I create more drive by holding onto her before releasing her to get the tossed toy.
-listen as I say her name, just as I release her. This will help her understand that if she doesn’t hear her name, it’s not her turn.
-watch me encourage her to return by bending low, gently clapping hands and using verbal encouragement.
-look at my hands when she comes back. They are on the puppy, stroking and praising, not grabbing the toy from her. Taking the toy straight away can make for a reluctant retriever, especially in a guarding breed.
-there is a second toy available so she can choose to swap. This can help avoid resource guarding.
-you’ll hear no formal cues at this point because none of the behaviour is fluent. We only label with words, perfect behaviours.
-watch me play tug with her between retrieves. A dog who enjoys tug will be more likely to bring the toy to you because, well, she can’t tug by herself.
A great first session in our training field.
