Never Ignore These Signs When It Comes To Asparagus Ferns (Asparagus densiflorus)

Hey Plant Lover, how you doing! Today we will be dealing with the most common problems we all have faced in the past if we have had raised Asparagus Ferns. I will talk about signs you should never ignore when it comes to these ornamental plants and then the corrective methods. So please sit tight and watch the whole video. Asparagus ferns are virtually indestructible (so much so that they’re tough to get rid of when planted in a garden), well, in a pot, the story changes dramatically. If your plant looks like this, then you got a couple of options, prune the asparagus fern to keep it healthy and cut any dead stems at the base.
Though asparagus ferns respond well to pruning, if in your case it doesn’t; then it’s time to move on to the next step- rearranging the soil mix, pruning the roots, and letting the plant know that it needs to restart its journey.

Dig out the plant’s root structure carefully, to avoid any major injuries to the roots

Add some new garden soil, the amount should be 1/10 of the pot’s volume, and the trick here is not to change the whole soil of the pot; the plant cannot be left in a new medium at such a critical time. So yes, 1/ 10th of the soil should be replaced with a new one right in the middle of the pot, not the top or bottom.

Cut off the dead stems, branches, and leaves. Also, prune all the roots at the end, just a few centimeters. Also mind you there is a chance that the plant will jumpstart from here or will go all dry and then with all the energy start from zero. So don’t be worried if the plant goes all brown and ultimately shows no signs of life, it’s doing just fine, you got to give it some more time.

Water immediately and thoroughly. Please keep the plant in a semi-shaded area for about a week and water every 3-4 days in the evenings.

It's been 5 days and the plant has gone all dry, no worries, things will look better soon

That’s 2 weeks after the process, and we have some new stems and branches. Now you can cut off the whole of the dried stems and branches, if earlier we had removed them the new stems would have had a hard time at the start of their life.

I have got some date palm saplings in the pot too, this would make sure the Asparagus fern stays hydrated right around the base, you too can have some plants at the periphery of the pot, preferably the ones with deeper roots and bigger leaves

A few additional points for your reference-

If you have pets, beware: asparagus fern is extremely toxic to dogs and cats

The sunnier the spot, the faster asparagus fern will grow. Yellow leaves indicate not enough sunlight, while brown leaves indicate too much and if the discoloration persists, now you know what you got to do
