Opened in 1902, designed by George T. Hine, featuring impressive red brickwork, ornate tiling, and expansive gardens by William Goldring, making it a significant institutional building. Like many asylums, it was a self-contained community with its own farm, bakehouse, water tower, and chapel, designed to be largely self-sufficient. Initially housed those with learning disabilities or epilepsy, not just severe mental illness, with patients first arriving from Grantham Workhouse. It became overcrowded during World War I and was used by the RAF as a crash and burns hospital during World War II (until 1947).
