The Ancient Storyteller is painted by Amrita Sher Gil. Amrita was hungary-born Indian Painter. She is often regarded as the pioneer of modern art in India .

The Ancient Storyteller is an oil painting which was painted in 1940. Amrita combined architecture and human figures to create an intimate rural domestic scene. In the painting, she depicts an old man sitting in front of three children as he was narrating some interesting stories to the kids. Beside the old man, there is an old female figure who is cooking food for the whole family. The painting could also be a depiction of feminine world, because the woman in the painting is engaged in her household chores and the man sits in a leisurely manner narrating stories to the kids. This painting is also a symbolic representation of feminine world because the woman depicted in the the painting is deeply involved within her household chores. It is just like they are forced to be within the four walls of the house. There are 2 female figures portrayed in the background of the painting. They also are involved in some chores of the house. All this scene happen within the four walls of a house.

The walls of the house are surrounded by thick and huge trees which creates a beautiful greenery. In the painting the women are depicted using bright colours, in order to attract the attention of the viewers. Bright colours are also used on trees and walls in the painting. Few flower petals can be seen at the bottom, surrounding the woman who is cooking . It is just like a tribute by the artist to that woman who provides food for the family and for also maintaining them healthy. The clothing of these human figures denotes that they are ordinary people who lead a simple life.
