Three decades after manual scavenging was banned in India, the casteist, inhuman and officially 'non-existent' practice is still prevalant in parts of India. Why? Bezwada Wilson, National Convener of the Safai Karmachari Andolan (SKA) and Pragya Akhilesh, Secretary of Bhim Safai Karmachari Trade Union, provide an insight.
While Akhilesh argues that the definition of manual scavenging needs to be extrapolated to include community toilet cleaners and #sanitationworkers who pick up biohazardous waste from hospitals, Wilson claims that the authorities have undercounted manual scavengers.
