This story began almost 30 years ago when a friend of my dad's, Chris O'Connell, first climbed State Land Stout. The route went straight up the middle of a massive overhanging roof that happened to be located in the woods off the back of my parents' property. As a kid, I would frequently hike back to Coyote Canyon where the overhang was located, sometimes even climbing on the rocky outcroppings. I knew that someday I wanted to climb Chris' route.
Now, 30 years later, my parents have retired and sold the campground where I grew up. State Land Stout exists in weird sort of limbo for me. It remains the spiritual sanctuary of my childhood, and I feel myself drawn back to reinvestigate and relive. I want to follow in the footsteps of those who have come before me, and maybe, just maybe, become a part of the climbing history of State Land Stout.
This video is dedicated to Geoffrey "Spike" Avercamp who passed on March 6, 2023. Peace and love, we miss you buddy.
