the leafing-through & rustling of papers loose but not unorganized (among them sketches, and jottings, and correspondence with far-flung experts whose shared passions and mutually encouraging curiosity demonstrate that even the Victorian world is small and interconnected, united thus in the camaraderie of human striving)
the meticulous drawing of diagrams & illustrations, with a delicacy of line as fine as any Royal Academy artist
the hurried scribbling of notes (with fingers hastily made free, and occasionally without looking) -- the notes sometimes, at their best, revealing a single thought written in two different hands
