Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz (The Invisible Life of Euridíce Gusmão, SFF 2019) traces his Algerian family’s recent past in this evocative documentary. Cannes 2021.
Aïnouz boards the Marseille to Algiers ferry, taking his first voyage to his family’s homeland. As the rickety ship rolls across the Mediterranean, seemingly heading into the past, the story of his parents’ broken relationship emerges. His mother, Iracema, was pregnant when she spilt up with his father, Majid. Aïnouz grew up in Brazil only meeting Majid, a fighter in Algeria’s war of independence, as an adult. Arriving in Algiers, Aïnouz films the city’s vibrant streets, before heading to the Atlas Mountains where his father was born. Aïnouz’s journey, filled with dreamlike and colourful images both past and present and accompanied by his poignant narration, is an evocative and magical blend of the personal and political.
