Balancing The Past With The Present. Old Town Alexandria Ch. 2

In this second installment on Old Town Alexandria, I look at the thing that I think makes Old Town special; its past. The determination to preserve the architecture, thus the look, of the area is impressive. Of course, it comes with a lot of strict regulations. Make sure to check out at least one of the four spite houses. It's something you really need to see in person to appreciate. Old Town's past, like that of many cities in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, also has a somber aspect to it, as it was a major center for the domestic slave trade from the 1820s to the Civil War. There are a number of locations in town that feature that history.
