I had the distinct pleasure of meeting and befriending Marcus through the Honorary Commander program on Eglin AFB. He was retiring in just under a year and was looking for someone to design and build his retirement piece. Through our conversations I realized he was interested in learning more about woodworking so I suggested we design and build it together in my shop. Marcus took me up on the offer and we embarked to doing just that. From going together to select the rough lumber (cherry) that would be used, to designing the layout and style of the table, to planing the boards, to jointing the edges and rough cutting the pieces, to selecting hardware, etc. We collaborated and built it together. Toward the end when his retirement was approaching and his responsibilities increasing, I finished the assembly and finishing on my own. It was a labor of love but it was good though because it though he helped to cut and shape the individual pieces, he had not seen it assembled nor see the finished piece. It was truly an honor to work alongside him teaching him what I could about woodworking and being a part of this stage of his life and career. I'm forever grateful to have met and made friends with him and his wife in the process. These photos somewhat document that process. The table turned out beautifully and I have a friend for life.
Congratulations Marcus! We miss you guys.
