Laura Valborg Aulin (1860-1928) began her musical career taking piano lessons from her grandmother. She studied at The Royal Swedish Academy of Music and at conservatories in Copenhagen and Paris, and already as a student her compositions earned respect and admiration. For unknown reasons, she left Stockholm midway through her career and stopped composing entirely.
Aulin's compositions were nearly forgotten, but a recent resurgence of interest has solidified the brilliance of her works. This String Quartet in E-Minor from 1889 bubbles with romantic, rich melodies and sparkling virtuosity. Although it received great reviews at its premiere, it was not revived until one hundred and one years later, in 1991.
