Watercolor Pencils AREN’T the Problem -Your Process Is!

If your watercolor pencil artwork keeps turning out muddy or overworked, it’s probably not the pencils.

In this video, I show how small changes in your process can lead to clean, controlled watercolor pencil results — especially when creating landscapes. We focus on what happens before the final paper ever gets touched: quick planning, intentional color choices using the color wheel, fast thumbnails, and building a strong landscape using foreground, middle ground, and background.

You’ll see how testing your watercolor pencils, keeping planning loose and quick, and letting layers fully dry can dramatically improve your final piece. This approach helps prevent muddiness and gives you more control over your colors and details.

SUPPLIES USED
1. Scrap paper (for quick planning ideas)
2. Pencil or pen (keep sketches loose and fast)
3. Eraser (optional)
4. Watercolor pencils (any brand — testing first is important)
5. Extra scrap paper (for color testing)
6. Watercolor paper for thumbnails
(use watercolor paper, about ¼ the size of your final piece)
7. Watercolor paper for final artwork
(a 9 × 12 inch sheet works well)
8. Paintbrush (a round brush works well)
9. Cup of clean water
10. Paper towels or cloth (for blotting excess water)
11. Masking tape (optional — helps reduce curling)
12. Flat board or surface to tape paper onto (optional)
13. Heat tool or embosser (optional — air drying is recommended to avoid curling)
