The expedition log of the U.S. Geological Survey party assigned to the White River Valley in western Colorado, dated September 14, 1891, opens with a notation about weather: "Clear. Warm for the season. Visibility excellent." The entry was made by Thomas Wickham, the party's lead surveyor, a man known among colleagues for his methodical temperament and his habit of recording even trivial observations. He noted the temperature at midday—sixty-eight degrees—and remarked that the aspens had begun to turn but had not yet reached their peak color. He estimated they had provisions for eleven more days.
