One of the most widespread legends in Brittany is that of a supposed city of Ys, which, at an unknown time, was said to have been swallowed by the sea. [...] The Fishermen tell strange stories. On stormy days, they say, one can see, in the trough of the waves, the spires of its churches; on calm days, one can hear the sound of its bells rising from the depths, playing the hymn of the day. (Ernest Renan, Souvenirs d'enfance et de jeunesse, preface)
This arrangement of the famous piano prelude offers a dreamlike perspective on the Cathedral of the legendary city of Ys. The symbolism of this work is depicted in the grand choral section, with an imitation of the organ on the accordion and bursts of bird calls on the guitar. At the height of the mystical illumination inherent to this section, the contrast of the most delicate sound touches from both instruments immerses the listener in a waking dream. The bells played in harmonics on the guitar, the priests' litanies in delicate poetic fragility in the highs of the accordion—altogether, an enchanting soundscape.
