Bukotsu [武骨] Game Sample - PC/Doujin

Not gonna lie... was hoping the next wave of videos would be a little different, but there's a lot happening on my end, so I have to spend some time adjusting. That said, this latest video is of a relatively simple Doujin game that's in its early stages, and it is tentatively (?) called "Bukotsu".

In its current state, these are all fine words to describe it, but there's one word I don't see up there, and that's "old-school". Okay, so that's two words, but whatever. Point being, Bukotsu (which also goes by the title of "Break Away From the Rat Race") is a neat throwback to early 90s Arcade fighters and reminds me A LOT of the first few Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting games as well as some of the earlier Doujin fighters from Team Volcanic Blaze ("Burning Blaze Red", "Happy Battle"). The current version (Pilot) has four playable characters and five stages. Each character has basic combos they can do, a back-step maneuver, two punch buttons, two kick buttons, and a combination button (each character has several combinations they can execute, though every character has at least one preset). Each character also has a desperation attack they can execute when their health falls to about 30%, and there is a dizzy "counter" where characters get dazed if they are hit in rapid succession (once the counter reaches 25 or higher, and a few funny things can happen as a result depending on when you reach that benchmark). Outside of that, it's about as unapologetically 90s as it gets.

This trait is, oddly enough, one of the game's strengths. While there have been retrograde Doujin fighters released over the years, few of them have tried to replicate the feeling of them as much as this game. The game has a scoring system, the 90s aesthetic is on point, there's a bonus stage where you have to hit incoming objects, and there's even a feature to turn on scanlines for you hardcore retro enthusiasts (it wouldn't look great in this video, but it looks fine in the game's normal 4:3 aspect ratio). One thing that is currently curiously absent from this game are projectiles, but I strangely don't miss them here. Each character can also execute counter moves to put greater emphasis on the close-quarters combat.

While many have moved on from simplistic fighters like this, if the dev (Creative Studio Ooji Rabbit) is aiming to recreate a proper 90s fighter, they're heading in the right direction. It's still pretty rough around the edges, but as it's still in development, that's to be expected.
