Deep beneath the landscapes of northern Australia lies the eroded heart of an ancient volcanic arc. The Pine Creek Orogen stretches across the Top End of the Northern Territory, including areas beneath modern-day Darwin, Kakadu National Park, and western Arnhem Land. Although much of the region is now buried beneath younger sedimentary basins, erosion has exposed deep levels of the crust inland, revealing Paleoproterozoic granites, metamorphosed sediments, and volcanic rocks formed nearly two billion years ago. This video explains how the Nimbuwah Domain represents the deep intrusive roots of the arc, how the Litchfield Province records back-arc heating and extension, and how the Central Domain preserves folded sedimentary basins that once sat between them.

Gold and uranium did not appear here by chance. This video shows how arc magmatism, crustal deformation, and long-lived fluid flow combined to concentrate metals within the Pine Creek Orogen. Gold became trapped in fractures, folds, and chemically reactive rocks during and after granite emplacement, while uranium accumulated where oxidised fluids met reduced basement rocks along major unconformities. These processes helped create some of Australia’s most important goldfields and one of the world’s major uranium provinces, all rooted in the deep plumbing of an ancient subduction system.

By looking beyond surface landscapes and focusing on the geology beneath our feet, this video reframes northern Australia as the exposed core of a long-vanished convergent margin. The volcanoes are gone, but the evidence of how they worked remains locked in the rocks. This is a story of deep time, continental growth, and the hidden processes that build continents and concentrate the resources modern societies depend on.
