Today's learning tip shows me working with a horse named Cyenne on her 2nd training session. I realized quickly this horse is very defensive and insecure - with a lot of nippy and biting behavior as well as kicking out and taking her shoulder into me.
In this video I show you my approach - I want to create a 'Yes' horse that is kind and willing. Instead of wacking her when she goes to nip or making her in trouble for showing me that she is stressed, I simply wait, clarify and allow her time to think - I help her by encouraging positions and postures of relaxation through bend and lowering her head, and give her lots of rubs when she tries.
Hitting her for nipping, etc would likely just make her more defensive and aggressive - instead I show her that there is no need for her to be worried, rather than proving her right by being forceful.
I am really excited to see how she turns out after more training.
