U.S. Marine Corps AH-1W Super Cobra’s, UH-1Y Venom’s, and Army AH-6 Little Bird’s engage designated targets with the support of Marines with Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force during an offensive air support exercise for Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) course 2-16 at Mt. Barrow Chocolate Mountain, Aerial Gunnery Range, Calif., April 5, 2016. WTI is a seven week training event hosted by Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One (MAWTS-1) cadre which emphasizes operational integration of the six functions of Marine Corps aviation in support of a Marine Air Ground Task Force. MAWTS-1 provides standardized advanced tactical training and certification of unit instructor qualifications to support Marine Aviation Training and Readiness and assists in developing and employing aviation weapons and tactics.
Marines with Marine Light Attack Training Squadron 303 provide close air
support from a UH-1Y Huey helicopter during a training exercise northeast
of Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz., Feb. 12, 2013. The crew of the
UH-1Y fire the GAU-21 .50 caliber machine gun and an M134 minigun at
simulated targets in the California desert.
U.S. Marines with Medium Tilt-rotor Squadron 265 (VMM-265), 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (31st MEU) conduct a close air support mission in the Republic of Korea (ROK) as part of exercise SSang Yong 2014. Exercise Ssang Yong is conducted annually in the Republic of Korea (ROK) to enhance the interoperability of U.S. and ROK forces by performing a full spectrum of amphibious operations while showcasing sea-based power projection in the Pacific.
