Sat in a quiet field with only a farm for company, only earthworks show the outline of the Abbey buildings. The Abbey started in 697 by King Æthelred Mercia. That was destroyed by a Danish Raid in 869. A nephew of William the Conqueror reestablished the priory in 1087 later it became an Abbey. It was the burial place of two saints, King Oswald of Northumbria and King Ethelred of Mercia. The Abbey closed not as a result of the Reformation but a rebellion by the monks after King Henry VIII's attempt to close poor performing Abbeys. By 1718, nothing above ground remained
Today it is a free to visit site with information boards to guide you round. There is also a nice display of artifacts from digs and more information in St Lawrence Church in Bardney. Best visit in spring when the grass is low
