Abstract: The mass function of black holes (BHs) at lower masses remains poorly constrained in the local universe due to observational challenges. The occupation fraction of BHs in low-mass galaxy hosts, such as compact stellar systems (CSSs), plays a crucial role in informing competing theories of supermassive BH formation. Stellar dynamical modeling has shown promise in constraining the masses of central BHs in CSS cores. We obtained JWST+NIRSpec/IFU data cubes to derive spatially resolved stellar kinematics of 18 selected CSSs in the Virgo cluster. In this talk, I will present preliminary results from our ongoing project—a comprehensive census of black holes in low-mass galaxies within the Virgo Cluster. Our study includes a detailed analysis of NGC 4486B, a compact elliptical galaxy distinguished by its double nucleus. Our findings confirm the presence of an overmassive black hole and provide compelling evidence that an eccentric disk mechanism may be responsible for the formation of this double nucleus.

The APSFLS series at CU Boulder aims to provide an opportunity for scientists (especially junior) to speak about their scientific work, as well as an opportunity for members of our community to informally socialize, network, and build collaborative relationships. While the lunch seminar's primary focus is scientific research, we welcome discussion of diversity, equity, and inclusion topics related to conducting work in our scientific field if the speaker wishes.
