The final round of Louth Radio Controlled Car Club's Wolds GP Summer series was held today with the addition of new carpet. The club had previously invested in new carpet earlier in the year, but had been plagued with excessive fluff every run held on it. This new replacement was hopefully the answer - and it was!
The carpet was perfect in my opinion. The grip was of a good level all day with only the smallest level of fluff coming towards the end of the day and it was mostly collecting on the rear clips of the body posts. Nothing to worry about!
My Team Associated TC8 had been a bit of a handful on the Friday previous at Newark Club so I made some changes on the day before Louth to address an aggressive front end. Here's what I changed.
+1 hubs to 0 - to lower the roll centre
Grey (2.4) rear springs instead of blue (2.6) - to aid the rear sitting down on power
Removed the rearmost chassis motor mount screw and returned to 1+1 config on the top deck screws - to aid flex throughout
I found the car to be perfect from the moment I hit the track in practice and I didn't change a thing all day.
In Q1 I clipped the apex at then of the straight which sent the car into the barrier. This snapped the rear steering plate off the hub leaving the wheel free to move as if it was a front wheel doing the steering. DNF.
Q2 I put in a perfect no red run and went 2nd in round.
Q3 picks up in this video and here are the first 2 minutes of my run. My fastest lap went down on lap 2 and the rest of the run was nice and clean. Went 3rd in round.
Q4 was a little rough. Not sure if I was just trying too hard or just got unlucky. 3 red laps dropping a few seconds here and there.. 4th in round and lining me up 3rd overall.
In the final James kept me honest. I don't think he was close enough to worry about and I didn't feel like I could pull away at all. Just goes to show how close racing like this can be!
All in all a really enjoyable meeting hosted by Louth Radio Controlled Car Club. Their carpet is working good and hopefully will continue to do so for many more laps to come! We return for their popular winter series later in the year.
