whats up everybody, if you are looking for a basic garden bed to start your growing season, you have come to the right place. costing a mere $30 to build. constructed of 6 cedar pickets, and half a 4x4. this one is 3 foot by 6 foot, 12 inches deep.
before making my first cut, I like to take my pickets and make sure they are straight, since this is a long run, if a picket is bowing or twisted, its going to be noticeable and harder to correct later.
to start, I cut four pickets to 70" long, this was mainly to remove the dog eared section.
then, I cut two pickets to 35", twice. i chose 35" because I can get two cuts from each picket to reduce waste.
the ideal width of a garden bed is between 3-4 feet. this is so the plants are within arms reach from either side.
now, grab your 4x4 and cut to 11.5", or the height of both your pickets stacked up.
i like to find the two sides I want facing out and cut a 45 degree profile to the top. its a simple decorative upgrade that really fancy things up. i find a spot on the miter saw and line up each to that spot.
yeah, we are already on assembly. I start with the short sided pieces so i can glue them up on my work bench. make sure your miters are facing down and in, and squirt some glue on the 4x4s side. be generous.
line up the 35" picket with your 4x4 and I use a 1-1/2" GRK screw. i position them so they are closer to the edge.
and repeat for the other board and your other side.
with both short sides assembled, i move them to the ground, squirt on some glue and screw them into place.
if you have scraps laying around from any of these other planter boxes we've built together, I use them to cover up and hide the screws on the side, and as extra bracing for the long side. if you dont have any of these scraps, rip some scrap picket pieces down to 2-3/8" and cut them to size. a little glue and some 1" brad nails will do the trick.
and here it is. a raised garden bed ready for
