How to Fish a Prop Bait with Bob Downey

A hard topwater prop bait can be one of the most exciting ways to get a big bite in shallow water, and today we're on the boat with Bassmaster Elite, Bob Downey, to learn how to fish a prop bait for shallow largemouth bass. With a traditional prop bait, such as the Rapala X-Rap Prop, give the bait a medium to long cast around shoreline cover or current seams around sand or rock. After the bait hits the water, allow the rings to dissipate and give it a few short downward pops of the rod. With slight twitches and pauses, a prop bait is best fished like a popper with brief movement followed by a 1-3 second pause. While particularly effective around the spawn, a hard topwater prop bait can provide explosive strikes anytime when the water is warmer and bass are shallow.
