The Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary, officially known as the National Elephant Conservation Centre (NECC), is a renowned wildlife conservation facility in Malaysia dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of endangered Asian elephants. Located in Lanchang, Pahang, about 90 minutes from Kuala Lumpur, it serves as a rescue and relocation center for elephants displaced by habitat loss and
human-wildlife conflict.
Key Features & Activities:
Elephant Rescue & Relocation
The sanctuary is operated by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN).
Its primary mission is to rescue wild elephants from conflict areas (such as plantations or villages) and relocate them to safer forest reserves.
Elephant Interaction & Education
Visitors can observe and interact with semi-wild and rescued elephants under supervision.
Activities include feeding, bathing, and short rides (though ethical concerns have led to some changes in recent years).
Educational talks highlight elephant behavior, conservation challenges, and Malaysia’s efforts to protect the species.
Facilities & Wildlife
The center houses a small herd of resident elephants, some of which are trained for relocation operations.
