Snajja Maltin is a series of features on endangered crafts in the Maltese islands being produced by the Malta Crafts Foundation in collaboration with Illum ma' Steph, with the aim of generating awareness and enhance the appreciation towards traditional crafts that are regrettably in danger of being lost, in the hope that younger generations might be enticed to revive the craft sustainably, possibly through the inclusion of innovative elements.
For the first feature in the new series, we visited Antoine Vella at his workshop in Rabat, where he spoke to us about traditional weaving on the loom.
Antoine spoke about the entire process behind his craft, from his initial work using both manual and mechanical machines to prepare the threads and the shuttle, to setting up the loom with the design he would want to create, and then passing one thread through another to weave the fabric and create the product.
