Did you know that in Chiang Mai, you can feed a family of five for less than the cost of a single dinner out back home? 🤯 That’s right—for under $20, I head to the Chiang Mai Gate Morning Market, fill my bags with vegetables, fruits, tofu, and a few sweet treats for the kids, and still have enough left over to whip up meals that last us all day.
Now, most people think feeding a family on a budget while traveling is a constant struggle. Many people think that feeding a family on a budget is difficult, especially in a foreign country where you might not speak the language or know where to find the best deals. I've had friends tell me that it's impossible to eat well without breaking the bank, but I'm here to prove them wrong. The truth is, with a little planning and creativity, you can eat amazing meals without overspending. In fact, I've found that some of the best meals in Chiang Mai are also the cheapest. But here’s the thing: when you embrace local markets, you don’t just save money—you eat fresher, healthier, and with way more variety than you’d expect.
Here’s what our meals often look like:
• Vegan pad kra pao or pad Thai, fresh and flavorful.
• Rice with dhal, black beans, or red beans, piled high with vegetables.
• Chappatis with a spiced subji on the side.
• Homemade cookies and muffins baked right in my air fryer (yes, it’s possible!).
• And tofu—lots of tofu. In Southeast Asia, it’s our protein powerhouse.
The beauty of shopping this way is not just the price, but the experience. I see familiar faces, chat with vendors who know me by name, and soak in the sounds and smells of the morning rush. By the end of the week, I’ve spent less than $70–$80 total, but my family has eaten like kings.
