Hey y'all! Here's a short video of an Amtrak P32-8BWH (Dash 8) locomotive, a type which does not see mainline use very often, pulling the Beech Grove haul as part of Train 50 the Cardinal in Indianapolis.
Sometimes, Amtrak uses the 50 train as a way to bring equipment down from Chicago to Beech Grove for maintenance, and today, that train was led by Dash 8 locomotive 519. The Beech Grove haul separates from the regular train in Union Station, and goes to the Beech Grove shops, while the regular train continues on to Cincinnati.
Dash 8 locomotives are rare on Amtrak's roster, there being only 20 built, and 16 remain in service today. They were built to fill in for Amtrak motive power during the transitional period between the EMD F40PH engine and the GE Genesis. With the success of the Genesis, the Dash 8's spend a majority of the time in the Chicago yard as switchers. However, their appearances in Indiana are becoming more common as Amtrak schedules more Beech Grove moves, which used to only happen on weekends.
