Edam is located about 20 km north of Amsterdam
This town was born of a settlement of peasants and fishermen of the twelfth century and developed after the construction of a port
Although the port has disappeared, the authenticity of the place and the charm that smells of the past make it a must for tourists. Here there are the canals, the movable bridges, the paved alleys
As in Alkmaar, also in Edam, every Wednesday morning in July and August, the famous and entertaining Cheese Market is organized in the market square.
The original Edam cheese is a small round cheese of about 1.7 kilos
It is a folkloric show with which the Dutch revive the traditional bargaining of the past, when the tradesmen publicly carried out the inspection and weighing of the many delicious yellow shapes in the square, while their tireless collaborators raised them with a sort of sedan chair, to move them from the weight in the square to the warehouse, as the purchases were decided.
The wearers wear white overalls and straw hats and the color of their hats shows the guild they belong to
The cheese was brought with boats and horses.

This reconstruction of the cheese market, although less known than Alkmaar, has nothing to envy. Indeed it is less chaotic and you can breathe the scent of time
In August, the cheese market is also revived in the evening combined with the street market.
