Litter Box Savings Tips
Do you find yourself spending too much on cat litter? I share three tips to help you save on cat litter. I will also give a bonus tip to litter scoops. This video will be especially useful to new cat owners, who are still learning all the hacks.
The wet litter from pee is the key to the problem and to the solution, not the poops, so these tips will be particularly useful to those of you with cats that pee a lot.
TIP #1 – This is the one that saves the most money.
Uncover the clumps before scooping. Tip the litter box so that the unused cat litter slides to one side and uncovers the clump. And then scoop. Scoop the clumps without taking any unused litter. By carefully gathering the used litter that remains, you can slow down the general contamination of the litter box. First do one side, and then the other.
By doing it this way, you only throw out the used litter and avoid spreading wet litter into the dry litter.
TIP #2
If you have more than one cat, use multi-cat clumping litter—even if it costs a little more. This litter has fast acting clumping. This is important because if you have more than one cat they might use the litter box shortly after one another. If the wet litter has not clumped yet, a second cat might uncover it and start spreading it. The little pieces are impossible to scoop up because of their size, and the whole litter box quickly becomes contaminated, requiring that you replace all the litter. Fast clumping helps prevent that and saves you money.
TIP #3
Use storage bins instead of standard litter boxes.
Storage bins have high sides which help in several ways. You can tip them up higher, which really helps with TIP #1. They also prevent as much litter from being kicked out of the box. Storage bins are also made from a different material, which is smoother and less porous. They are easier to scoop and last longer before wearing out. The down side is that they take up more room and are more awkward to clean out.
I estimate that I have saved at least 50% on cat litter costs by using these three methods.
Bonus Tip
Don’t buy your scoops in the cat aisle of the pet store. Buy them in the small mammals aisle (the one for rabbits and gerbils). You get exactly the same thing for less money.
