First Lieutenant Ed F. Fahrendorf US Army (Ret.) was born September 28, 1944, and passed away peacefully in his home on April 18, 2021. He was 76. He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Shirley; daughter, Christin Fahrendorf; sons Jeff (Heather) and Brian Fahrendorf (Maree) as well as grandchildren Grant Erwin, Nathan, Isabelle and Sidney McCreery, and William and Kayla Fahrendorf. He also loved and enjoyed Abe and Laela Bedjaoui who became members of the family when Heather married Jeff. Also survived by sisters Ann Sweeney (Patrick) of Dayton, OH and Mary Kay Disch (Jim) of Cleveland, OH as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ed was born in Dayton, OH and graduated from the University of Dayton with a B.S. degree in Business. He proudly served 2 years during the Vietnam Era in the U.S. Army while rising to the rank of First Lieutenant. He was stationed at Ft. Sill in OK. He was a lifelong patriot and WWII history enthusiast. He treasured visiting numerous WWII memorial sites on a 2018 cruise from Paris to Normandy.
Ed enjoyed a successful sales and management career in the furniture industry. He began his career with Rike’s Department Store in Ohio and in 1975 moved to Texas to work for Titche’s, a division of Allied Department Stores. After several interim years as a manufacturer’s representative for Seth Thomas grandfather clocks, he returned to retail with Dillard’s Department Stores, where he retired in 2009.
Ed took great pride in his grandchildren’s achievements. Children loved his Donald Duck voice imitation. He enjoyed dining out with friends and traveling. He always had a story or joke to tell and was fun to be with. His signature cocktail was “Beefeater martini, straight up, dry, with a twist and olives on the side.”
Having worked with horses on his Uncle Bob’s farm in Ohio, Ed quickly acclimated to Texas. Ed was an aficionado of art and literature from the Southwest. He particularly enjoyed the Texas history, the landscape, Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove and visits to Santa Fe, NM. Ed loved everything about DFW except for the severe weather. Everyone knew that when severe weather approached, Ed often would derail any social events so that he could be near his tornado shelter.
Ed was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church. He loved the Lord and was a prayer warrior to many who were going through tough times. We are comforted that he has been reunited in Heaven with his youngest son, Blake and his younger sister, Suzy and parents Bill and Betty Fahrendorf.
