Dr. Hatem Eleishi presents in this video the basic information that patients need to know about non-biological DMARDs. DMARDs stands for Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs. The prescription of a non-biological DMARDs for a patient with an autoimmune arthritis disease, also called an autoimmune rheumatic disease, does not depend on the specific arthritis diagnosis the patient has. Rather, it depends on the organ or the system of the body that has been affected by the autoimmune disease. So if the joints are the organ that had been affected, this means that one of a particular set of non-biological DMARDs should be prescribed regardless of whether the diagnosis was rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus. But if it was the kidney that was affected, then it is one of a particular set of medication that would apply and so on. Reminder of the famous commercial names of the commonly used non-biological DMARDs include methotrexate, arava (or avara in some countries), plaquenil, salasopyrin, imuran, sandimmune neoral, pentasa, endoxan, cellcept and otezla. Note: Non-biological DMARDs are also traditionally called synthetic DMARDs or traditional DMARDs.
