[ Collioure ] This beautiful spot in south-west France attracted artists from Matisse to Picasso

Henri Matisse arrived at Collioure in May 1905, aged 36, despondent, full of self-doubt, and quite poor.
The energy of the small fishing port struck him as soon as he stepped off the train. His sadness lifted.
He saw color and light everywhere, almost violent in its intensity.
He was about to paint a hundred canvases and launch a new artistic movement.

Collioure is a town on the Mediterranean coast of southern France. On the sea, the medieval Château Royal de Collioure offers dramatic coastal views.
The bell tower of 17th-century Notre-Dame-des-Anges Church was once a lighthouse.

Numerosos artistas llegaron a Collioure en el siglo XX incluido Henri Matisse.
Su luz, su cielo azul y sus calles llenas de edificios de alegres colores hicieron de este típico pueblo marinero un lugar donde encontrar inspiración para su arte.
Es conocido especialmente por ser el lugar donde se fraguó y consolidó uno de los movimientos más importantes de las primeras vanguardias pictóricas del siglo XX: el fauvismo.

El bonito pueblo costero de Colliure se encuentra en la Côte Vermeille a apenas 30 km de la frontera entre España y Francia, un pueblo pintoresco a que se llega en apenas dos horas desde Barcelona, un lugar perfecto entonces para una escapada de fin de semana.
