In the heart of West Virginia, I take on a 1000 mile dual sport adventure with two of my girlfriends. On day four, we experience our first mechanical issue of our trip and get help from the Immortal Sasquatch. You'll be along for the ride with my POV and drone footage.
Overall it was a short day, we covered only 65 miles. Gravel roads slowly dwindled away and we had miles of fresh twisty asphalt as we dropped down the mountain into Parsons. They've got a cool county courthouse that looks like it would fit right into the Netherlands with its architectural style.
We stopped for lunch at B&J's Family Diner (highly recommended), fueled up, got groceries and carried onward. As we were leaving Parsons there were some thick clouds on the horizon and it wasn't long afterward a heavy downpour started.
We pulled off onto the shoulder donned our rain gear and carried on with our sights on Black Water Canyon, Dolly Sods, and the Cranberry Glades. I led us off the pavement and the gravel road quickly became rocky and lots of potholes. Less than a mile later we came upon a washed out culvert and I stopped to suss out the best line. I down shifted into a lower gear and my shifter lever made an odd sound didn’t feel right. On closer inspection the splines on it were stripped out and we had a decision to make. Do a quick fix and carry on into the most remote and most technically difficult section we'e yet to encounter, or turn back to Parsons and regroup. It wasn't a hard decision to make given the rainclouds, so we reversed course back to Parsons.
We found a cheap cabin right on the river and put calls out to our guys back home. We posted up on Facebook groups in WV and the suggestions came rolling in from far and wide. Highly entertaining and mildly helpful. The most common suggestion was to get a pair of Vicegrips and carry on. If you have a suggestion other than carry an extra shifter, drop it in the comments below. I learned a valuable lesson, and now that I'm back home, I've added extra shifter and levers to my toolkit.
While we waited for possible replacement levers to materialize, we jumped in the river, had an icy cold beer and made the best black bean burritos on the MSR stove. Nothing like a moto adventure to build up an appetite, and no matter what's in front of you it's the best meal you'll ever have. And so it was. White cheddar, avocado, black beans and a can of rotel.
Later that night, a guy named Chad Johnson aka the Immortal Sasquatch drove over an hour with a spare lever for me. What a legend. He brought extra tools, multiple levers to try out, and his sense of humor. He kept us laughing about not being a creeper with nothing better to do that night. As he grinded the lever down on a rock so it would clear my case, he told us stories of surviving colon cancer, getting T-boned on his bike by a crack ho.
We all slept well on a squeaky spring mattresses as rain pitter pattered on the tin roof throughout the night. The next morning, the skies dawned clear, we ate leftover burritos for breakfast, packed up and set our course for what would be the best section of the whole ride.
And...Action!
